Hey there fashionistas,

How are y’all doing? If the summer heat is killing you, ME TOO. I literally cannot imagine anything worse than the scorching heat of the summer right now.

All I can think about right now is a beach with cool breeze and a glass of my favorite drink. Goa Maybe? But, it’s not vacation time for me right now and girls gotta do what she’s gotta do right?

Dressing up in the summer is not always my favorite thing (I’m sure it’s not yours too) because you take all that effort to look fabulous and the sun and sweat manage to mess it all up. BUT I do love my summer outfits. And this season sustainable fashion has taken the industry by storm.

Let me start by telling you what exactly is sustainable clothing? In simple words it is clothing and accessories that are made while reducing the impact on the environment. Technically that means minimization of use of toxic chemicals, protection of workers rights and animals rights, recycling and reusing and much more. And the best part is that it doesn’t just apply to the final product. Right from the production of raw material to the transportation of items to the packaging. All of this is done in such a way as to preserve the sanctity of the nature around us. I’m sure most of us think that ethical clothing is expensive but I am here to tell you that is not true. There are brands out there that are eco-friendly and budget friendly at the same time. Clothing that protect the environment shouldn’t be pricey and they’re NOT. I absolutely love that the eco-fashion trend is raging right now because

  1.  It is the need of the hour right now

  2.  They make perfect summer clothing.

In my hunt for affordable sustainable clothing, these are the 5 brands that I completely adore and admire:

1) No Nasties

No Nasties Swing DressIf you  are looking for perky comfy summer tees, this is your stop. No Nasties is all about 100% organic and 100% fair trade clothing like the brand promises. They are determined to inspire people to choose clothing that saves the planet and do not compromise on style at the same time. They make casual clothing look super cool  and accessories that are simple, elegant and chic. This is my one stop shop for everything from boxy tees to maxi dresses for cozy summer vibes. This brand is a must have in your summer closet. Their clothes range from Rs.999 to Rs. 4000 and it is definitely in my shopping bag. You can buy that beautiful swing dress here

2) Forty Red Bangles
White Shirt Dress Red Fort Bangles

Two words for this brand – effortlessly snazzy. What caught my attention about this brand is the interesting concept attached to its brand name. In the Indian culture red bangles worn by the bride  indicate the status of new wedding. This concept is applied to the marriage between sustainability and design. Having worked in Melbourne with refugee groups and social enterprises, founder Ramona Saboo was inspired to start something of her own keeping the interest of the environment first. The brand makes clothes that are as interesting as its concept. I’m talking uber cool outfits for women and children, accessories and even eco friendly home decor. Their collection has swing tops, shirt dresses and much more. All their clothing come in minimal colors like  white, black, khaki and charcoal. These outfits make a perfect fit for the minimalist in me. You can buy this white shirt dress here

3) SamtanaSamtana Graphic Tee

Samtana as a brand is powered by two noble causes 1) Eco Friendly clothing 2) Provide mid-day meals to children. They have a fantastic variety of clothing for men and women. Bright summer colors and printed tees are impressive from their collection. They are very affordable too. Ranges starting from Rs. 800 only. They have cute color block eco-friendly dresses that may be your next summer staple. For every sale they make, they give back to the society. They contribute ten percent of their sales towards providing meals for the underprivileged children. It’s amazing to see how some brands understand the society and make their contribution. This gives us all the more reason to make purchases for a cause. You can buy this graphic tee here.

4) Ethicus

Ethicus White SareeSarees in Summer? Yes please. I know how that sounds but when you wear the organic, soft, beautiful sarees from Ethicus you won’t be complaining. Be it summer or winter, you will always have festivals and functions to attend. And these sarees should be in your wardrobe. Not only do they amazing and classy prints but are easy to carry and look quite rich. Simplicity at its best. It was started by a husband and wife duo to empower the local handmade weaving tradition. Their sarees start from a range of Rs. 7800 and are worth every penny. The work that goes into making these masterpieces is incredible and it shows on the final product. You can buy this beautiful saree here.

5) Do You Speak Green
Do You Speak Green DressDo You Speak Greens primary focus is to provide consumers with a brand that match aesthetics with ethics. They offer an eco-friendly range of casual wear and yoga wear for both men and women. They use blends of organic cotton waste and even bamboo for making clothes at affordable prices. They have a fantastic collection of Yoga Wear that will make a great comfy athleisure outfit. The brand believes in something called the triple bottom line – social responsibility, environmental soundness and economic viability. Their price ranges from Rs. 800 to Rs. 3000 for printed tees and dresses. You can buy this one here.

I am definitely trying to make a switch to eco-friendly clothing this summer because I personally think fashion should be ethical too. It’s time we walk, talk and wear sustainability. Have you opted for organic clothing yet? If yes, which sustainable fashion brands do you wear? I would love to know the brands that you’ll connect with and why.
