Budapest first gained popularity as a party destination because it was cheap to get to and you don’t need that much spending money while you’re out there. But in the last couple of years, more and more people have started visiting Budapest because it’s an amazing city with so many great cultural sights to see. The only downside to that is that the prices are starting to go up a bit and it’s not quite as affordable as it used to be. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t plan a budget trip to Budapest anymore. If you follow these simple tips, you can still have a great city break in Budapest without breaking the bank.

Consider A Cruise

Cruises are one of the cheapest ways to travel because you get your travel and accommodation all rolled into one. Most of them are all inclusive as well so you don’t need to spend that much money on food and drink while you’re out there as well. If you search online for the best cruise deals, you can usually find some incredibly cheap trips. Budapest is the ideal location for a cruise because it lies on the river Danube. If you follow the river, you’ll get to Bratislava and Vienna which are both amazing cities, so you can roll 3 amazing destinations into one trip and it’ll be a lot cheaper than flying to all of those places in separate trips.

Stay In Pest

A lot of people don’t realize that Budapest used to be 2 separate cities, Buda and Pest, divided by the river. The two districts are joined as one city but people still refer to them separately, and there is quite a big difference in price between the 2. Pest is the cheaper side of the river in terms of accommodation and attractions so if you’re looking for a budget trip, you should stay there. It’s on this side that you’ll find a lot of the thermal baths, some of the best museums, and the famous ruin bars. These great pop-up bars built inside old ruined buildings are a very popular tourist attraction in Budapest and they’re everywhere on the Pest side. It doesn’t take long at all to walk over the bridge into Buda so you’re not missing out on anything by staying in Pest.

Book An Airbnb

There are some cheap hotels in Budapest but they’re not very nice. If you want to stay somewhere a bit more luxurious, you’ll have to pay quite a bit more, which is why it’s best to avoid the hotels entirely. Instead, you should book an Airbnb because they’re so cheap in Budapest. Some of them cost as little as 20 Euros a night. This is definitely the best way to cut the cost of accommodation when you’re visiting Budapest.

Things to do in Budapest

There are so many cheap things to do in Budapest so there’s no reason to spend a lot of money. You can visit the thermal baths, take a walk up to the castle at the top of the hill in Buda, visit some of the great parks or take a trip around the Terror Museum. The food and drinks are cheap in most places so as long as you avoid some of the high end restaurants in Buda, you won’t spend much money at all.

Even though the prices in Budapest are going up a little bit as it’s becoming more popular, you can still have a great trip on a budget.

These are my quickest tips for Budapest. Let me know in comments if you agree or you have some more for me to add to the list.
